Theatre Beyond Words is an internationally renowned physical theatre company that has played to over 2 million people since its inception in 1977, delighting audiences from New York to Madrid and Toronto to Tokyo with its unique style of visual theatre. Best known for their heartwarming series of 14 non-verbal larval mask plays featuring the Potato People, the ensemble develops original works for both family and mature audiences. Theatre Beyond Words has garnered international acclaim for its artistic and entertaining performances that transcend language barriers with the innovative uses of mask, puppetry, mime and music.
While international touring has been the mainstay of the better part of Theatre Beyond Words’ 34 years of operation, the company is now making strides to invest themselves in the local Niagara community and have a more significant presence here at home. We see the new performing arts centre as an integral part of that plan both in providing new performance facilities and increasing awareness and exposure for the arts community here in St. Catharines.
The variety of performance venues that will be available in the new centre is also very appealing to our company. The Dance and Theatre venue of 200 seats is closest in size to the performance spaces we currently use when performing our work locally and would likely continue to be the best suited space for us. However, the availability of the other venues makes presenting one of our more specialized productions more feasible. For example, the Recital Hall would be an ideal size space for a production of Theatre Beyond Words’ symphony show, Suite Potato. Also, when on tour, we are often presented in venues the size of the Concert Hall as our work presents well in spaces of this size. Having access to these different sized venues will provide us with opportunities to continue to expand our audience base and present a wider variety of productions from our repertoire.
