The Niagara Dance Company is Niagara’s only contemporary dance company. Dedicated to creating a repertoire of original dance work, to performing and presenting Canadian dance, and to bringing a diversity of aesthetic styles to the stage, the company was founded to increase public awareness and access to the art of dance. The company produces and presents dance annually and offers a Master Class Series, a Mentorship Program, Workshops, Classes and a Summer Intensive program.
Since its first performance in 2007, Niagara Dance Company has performed the works of emerging, < <a href=”page:// 13:page13″></a>nationally and internationally acclaimed dance artists in its productions at the Sullivan Mahoney Courthouse Theatre in St. Catharines. Classic Canadian contemporary dance works such as First Music (1969) by Patricia Beatty (Co-founder Toronto Dance Theatre, Member of the Order of Canada) and Baroque Suite duet (1972) by David Earle (Dancetheatre David Earle, Member of the Order of Canada) have made their way into the company’s repertoire.
Artistic Director, Mary Jo Mullins, co-founded the Niagara Dance Company in 2006 after a decade of dancing and choreographing in Toronto. Ms. Mullins is dedicated to growing and developing professional dance in Niagara. Since its inception, Niagara Dance Company has been very active in the community providing several workshops and special projects for youth and professional development for teachers in our community. The company has facilitated workshops throughout Niagara in elementary schools, secondary schools, dance schools, at Ridley College and at Brock University. In 2008, Niagara Dance Company delivered workshops to over 1000 elementary school students through the award winning Artist in the Classroom program by Carousel Players.
“Our Mentorship Program, Classes and work with choreographers has grown many opportunities for dance artists, teachers, students, aspiring dance professionals and dance audiences in St. Catharines and the Niagara Region.” said co-founder Mary Jo Mullins. “The new performing arts centre will provide a venue for Niagara’s talented dancers to perform and will give audiences an opportunity to see the work of internationally renowned artists and Canada’s leading dance companies.”
