“…to entertain, educate and inspire through the performance of fine choral music”
Chorus Niagara has been sharing the joy of singing since 1963 when it was founded as a complement to the St Catharines Symphony Orchestra. Since then Chorus Niagara has become a thriving and vital independent cultural institution in the Niagara Region.
Under the inspired and passionate leadership of Artistic Director Robert Cooper, Chorus Niagara has expanded from its early membership base of 24 singers to its present 100 dedicated and enthusiastic singers of all ages from across the Niagara Region; subscription sales have increased by 500%; and concerts are performed before sell-out audiences.
Known for its innovative programming and moving performances, Chorus Niagara presents a wide spectrum of music, including the great classical choral repertoire, exciting 20th and 21st century pieces, new Canadian and specially commissioned works, and inventive multi-media presentations as well as operatic, operetta and lighter musical fare.
Artistic Director Robert Cooper has been a fervent advocate for the creation of the performing arts centre. “While singing is an egalitarian experience for all,” notes Cooper, “choral music is a performance art. To sing, to hear and to listen in the acoustic splendour of the new Concert Hall will be a transformational experience for all. Our Audiences will be poked, prodded and excited both intellectually and emotionally by the magnificent interplay of creative and human endeavour afforded by this new performing space. Our Singers and Guest Artists will be stimulated, challenged and inspired, not just by the bricks and mortar of their new surroundings but also by the revitalized community of artistic colleagues who will surround us. Moreover, our community will experience a renewed cultural vibrancy on St Paul Street that will have lasting ripple effects of positive artistic energy across the Region.”
Chorus Niagara is a growing choral family. In addition to our adult mixed chorus, we are proud of our Chorus Niagara Children’s Choir (CNCC), a treble-voiced choir for children aged 7 to 17, under the skilled and enthusiastic direction of Melanie Marlin, and our unique Side-By-Side High School Chorale, a 20-voice ensemble of young adult singers chosen from Niagara Region high school music programs to perform alongside CN in one concert each season.
Chorus Niagara is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, managed by Diana McAdorey, a professional arts administrator, and supported by all levels of government granting bodies in addition to the generous community at large.
